Thinking of upgrading my Internet bandwidth

By: Dennis Rongo | December 25, 2008

I was hoping to get broadband Internet through Comcast but since I don't have a cable TV service, I have to have a professional installation done. Instead of only having to pay the minimum by getting a self-installation kit, I have to pay extra just to get broadband. If I'm going to do a professional installation, why not just get the whole thing and get the cable TV also to make the "professional" installation worthwhile. Since I don't watch any TV at all (besides Hulu), then I question myself if having an extra cable TV would be worth it. I don't think so.

Speed Test
So to avoid the hassle that comes with the cable Internet business, I will have to opt for just a simple upgrade. Paying an extra $10 more per month more than doubles my speed up to approximately 6 Mbpsspeed_test. The screen shot here is a speed test that I did today so I can have an idea of my Internet speed. This is nothing compared to broadband Cable even when upgrading to 6 Mbps. When I looked it up yesterday, broadband Cable gives you 12 Mbps at least and even more if you get a PowerBoost. I'm not a gamer but I like having to stream vides off of NetFlix in higher video definition without having for 30 minutes buffer just to watch a movie. Among other things, software patches and upgrades downloads will be faster (hopefully). I will have to call them again tomorrow since they're closed today (Christmas) to see if if the 6 Mbps option is even available in my area to begin with.

I'll give it another day just to think about this if paying for the extra $10 will even be worth it. Maybe I might just stick with my existing plan. Either way, Happy Holidays!
